Zatímco v Americe podniky zrychlily obměnu PC v očekávání konce životnosti Windows XP, v Evropě firmy nadále šetří a spotřebitelé si stále častěji kupují raději tablety.

Podle Gartneru se světový prodej osobních počítačů v druhém čtvrtletí propadl o 10,9 % meziročně. Do prodejních kanálů se za období dodalo 76 milionů PC. Světový pokles pokračuje již pátým čtvrtletím a je prý vůbec nejdelším za dosavadní historii osobních počítačů.

V oblasti EMEA (v Evropě, na Blízkém východě a v Africe) jsou přitom propady už dvě čtvrtletí po sobě dvouciferné.

Podle Gartneru se vůbec zmenšuje počet PC v užívání. Pro běžná spotřební užití je stále více nahrazují tablety. Ty také přispěly ke zhroucení trhu s mininotebooky. Podle Gartneru není opodstatněné tvrdit, že za propadem PC stojí Windows 8.

O první místo těsně soupeří Lenovo a HP. V posledním čtvrtletí se do popředí dostalo Lenovo. HP zůstává silné v severní a jižní Americe i v EMEA, zatímco v Asii je tradičně slabé. Lenovo přitom také oslabuje v Asii, ale prudce posiluje v obou Amerikách a v EMEA.

Při pohledu na světové výsledky vidíme, že Lenovo jediné propadlo jen nepatrně. Ale společnosti na prvních třech příčkách vůbec klesají méně než celé odvětví, na úkor obrovských světových propadů značek Acer a Asus. Jenže podle Gartneru se za tím do značné míry skrývá rozhodnutí těchto dvou výrobců opustit mininotebooky a plně se soustředit na tablety, a ty nejsou v těchto číslech zastoupeny.

Celkový meziroční propad v Evropě (a MEA) je obrovských 16,8 %. Zcela proti trendu se tu daří Lenovu.

Dell se propadl podstatně méně než celý trh (zatímco v USA a v Japonsku dokonce roste).

HP si nejen v Americe, ale i v Evropě ještě drží podstatný náskok před Lenovem, a to především v podnicích, ale v Evropě oslabuje rychleji než trh.

Gartner si evropský propad vysvětluje jednak houfným přechodem Evropanů na tablety, jednak i vyprazdňováním skladů (a tedy snížením objednávek) v očekávání sestav s novými procesory Haswell. Dotykovou obrazovku mělo stále méně než 10 % dodaných notebooků.

Dodávky jsou prý obzvláště slabé především v Evropě západní. Nejisté hospodářství nutí omezovat výdaje.

V Americe je propad trhu jen meziroční, a to ještě dosti malý. Ze čtvrtletí na čtvrtletí dokonce vzrostl, a to o 8,5 %. Gartner soudí, že za oživením trhu může být blížící se konec podpory Windows XP a s tím souvisící zrychlení obměny počítačů v podnikové sféře.
