Při nehodě Tesly Model S v americkém Texasu, která po nárazu do stromu začala hořet, zemřeli dva lidé. K nehodě došlo v sobotu večer a podle lokální televize KPRC 2 bylo auto bez řidiče. Hašení vozu trvalo 4 hodiny a hasiči museli na auto kvůli baterii vystříkat 121 tisíc litrů vody. Tesla podle televize nabourala poté, co ve vysoké rychlosti nestihla odbočit a vyjela z vozovky.

Televize cituje strážníka Marka Hermana, podle kterého auto nikdo neřídil, přičemž jeden člověk seděl na předním sedadle spolujezdce a druhý na zadním. Agentura Bloomberg ale dodává, že strážník nesdělil, zda byl v Tesle zapnutý samořídící systém nebo ne.

Americká CNBC upozorňuje, že Tesla uživatelům nabízí funkcionalitu Autopilot a beta verzi samořídícího režimu FSD (Full Self-Driving), přičemž ale zákazníky upozorňuje, že auta stále nejsou schopná jezdit v běžném provozu bez dohledu řidiče. Automobilka si za FSD účtuje 10 tisíc dolarů. 

Šéf Tesly Elon Musk nicméně v únoru v podcastu Joe Rogan Experience řekl, že autopilot je dnes už dostatečně spolehlivý na to, aby řidič mohl řídit jen pokud opravdu chce.  Podle nejnovějšího reportu Tesly mají vozy se zapnutým Autopilotem jednu nehodu na 6,7 milionu kilometrů. S vypnutým Autopilotem ale se zapnutými bezpečnostními prvky vozu pak jednu nehodu na 3,3 milionu kilometrů. CNBC ale podotýká, že automobilka nezveřejnila data k nezávislé analýze.
